Almost every garment has a small label with symbols that tell you how to wash, dry and iron it. Learning the five basic symbols takes a few minutes and saves clothes from shrinking, fading and losing their shape.
The washtub: washing
A tub with a number shows the maximum water temperature in °C. Dots mean the same thing: one dot is cool, more dots are warmer. A hand in the tub means hand wash only, and a crossed-out tub means do not wash with water at all.
The triangle: bleaching
An empty triangle means any bleach can be used. A triangle with two diagonal lines means oxygen (colour-safe) bleach only. A crossed-out triangle means no bleach.
The square: drying
A square with a circle inside refers to tumble drying; the dots show the heat level. A crossed-out symbol means do not tumble dry — hang or lay the garment flat instead.
The iron: ironing
Dots on the iron show the maximum temperature. Delicate fabrics such as silk and synthetics need a cool iron; cotton and linen can take more heat.
The circle: professional cleaning
A circle means the item can be dry cleaned. A crossed-out circle means it should not be dry cleaned. If a label shows only a circle and a crossed-out washtub, dry cleaning is the safe choice.
When in doubt
Abayas, suits, embroidered and delicate pieces are best left to professionals. In the Superlaundry app you can book dry cleaning or wash & iron, see the price for each item and follow your order in real time.
